Description:

Electronic prescribing of medications, or E-Prescribing, is on the rise. According to Surescripts, the number of prescriptions routed electronically grew from 68 million two years ago to 191 million last year.

Many say e-prescribing is the answer to streamlining the healthcare system, improving safety and reducing costs.

One Pennsylvania healthcare system is seeing dramatic results from its wireless computerized physician order entry system, or CAPOE. Clinicians there are finding this healthcare technology is allowing them to better participate in their patient’s ongoing care.

Coupled with bedside barcoding and a prescription dispensing robot, the CAPOE system at Lehigh Valley Health Network is greatly reducing the harmful effects of medication errors on patients, to less than one in a million.
